Emergency Dental Services in and Around Cincinnati, OH

Tooth Knocked Out (Avulsed Tooth)

If your tooth has been knocked out of your mouth it is imperative to see your dentist as soon as you can, because tissues, nerves and blood vessels can become damaged, as a result. Emergency dental services can be a life-saver for preventing permanent damage.

What to do:

  1. Call the dentist as soon as you can.
  2. Pick up your tooth by the crown – don’t touch the root! Next, rinse the tooth under warm water.
  3. If possible, place the tooth back into its socket, or tuck it into the cheek pouch. As a last resort, you can put the tooth into a cup of milk, saliva or water, until you can make it to the dentist. Keep in mind, it is very important to make sure the tooth doesn’t dry out.
  4. Get to the dentist’s office.

Your dentist will do their best to place the tooth into its natural socket. If the tooth can be placed back into the socket, there is a strong chance that the tissues will grow and support the tooth again. However, if the tooth doesn’t reattach or if the inner mechanisms of the tooth is damaged, root canal therapy may be necessary.

Lost Filling or Crown

It isn’t unheard of for a crown or filling to come loose while eating. If this happens, your tooth may become very sensitive to temperature changes and pressure. If the crown becomes detached from your mouth, contact your dentist or emergency dental services as soon as possible. Depending on your situation, your dentist may be able to reinsert the crown, so be sure to store the crown in a cool, safe place. Additionally, if the crown is out of your mouth for an extended period of time, your teeth may shift or become damaged.

If you can’t make it to the dentist immediately, follow these steps:

  1. Alleviate pain by applying clove oil to the tooth.
  2. Clean the crown and reattach it using dental cement (you can find this at your local pharmacy).
  3. Smear the top of your tooth with dental cement if the crown is lost.

***Never use glue of any kind to reattach the crown.

Cracked or Broken Teeth

Although your teeth are strong they are still susceptible to fractures, cracks and breaks that are typically caused by trauma, grinding or biting. If your tooth has been fractured, cracked or broken, contact your dentist immediately.

Steps to Take at Home:

  1. Call your dentist immediately.
  2. Rinse your tooth with lukewarm water.
  3. Apply gauze to the affected area if you’re bleeding.
  4. Minimize swelling and pain by applying a cold, damp cloth to the cheek.
  5. If you’re unable to make it to the dentist immediately cover the affected area with dental cement, which can be found at your local pharmacy, and take a pain reliever.

Your dentist will determine the best solution based on the nature of the break or fracture.

Dislodged or Loose Teeth

Depending on the situation, it may be possible to save a tooth that has been dislodged as a result of trauma or decay. If your tooth becomes dislodged or loose, contact your dentist as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. Next, treat the affected area using a cold compress and pair relieving medication. During your appointment, your dentist will use splints to stabilize your tooth, however, if the tooth doesn’t heal, a root canal may be necessary.
